Hadrian's Wall Path
This 84-mile coast-to-coast route follows the Roman frontier from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway, with the wall itself appearing and disappearing along the way. We look at how much actual Roman archaeology you'll encounter, why it's busier than you'd expect, and whether walking it east-to-west makes any real difference.
Pennine Way
Britain's oldest and arguably toughest National Trail runs 268 miles along the Pennine backbone from Derbyshire to the Scottish Borders. We cover what makes this peat-bog-and-moorland marathon so demanding, how long it actually takes, and whether your first long-distance walk should really be quite this relentless.

What Is The Countryside Code?
The Countryside Code is the official guidance for anyone visiting the English and Welsh countryside — respect other people, protect the natural environment, and enjoy the outdoors responsibly. It's not legally binding, but several of the behaviours it describes are.
Red flags and firing times on military training land
UK government guidance says to check published times before visiting and never enter when red flags are flying or red lights show at night. Silence or the absence of visible activity does not mean training isn't taking place, and does not override local signs, closures or scheduled firing.
The Wild Camping Grey Area: Where You Can, Where You Can't, and Why Scotland's Different
Britain's wild camping laws are a proper muddle: you generally need permission in England and Wales, Dartmoor's commons offer a genuine legal right to pitch, and Scotland grants access across most land under its own statute. The confusion comes from assuming that permission to walk somewhere includes permission to sleep there, which it usually doesn't, and the legal ground shifts beneath your boots without so much as a signpost to warn you.
What to Actually Do When a Farmer Tells You You're Trespassing
Sometimes you are trespassing, sometimes the path is legitimately diverted, and sometimes farmers are simply wrong about where rights of way run. How you respond determines whether it becomes a polite correction or a police matter, and knowing the law helps more than getting defensive.

The Grey Squirrel Problem: When an American Import Owns Every Woodland Edge
Grey squirrels arrived in Britain in 1876 and have spent the last century and a half making red squirrels extinct across most of England. They're heavier, more aggressive, carry a virus that doesn't affect them, and they've turned every lowland wood into contested territory.
The Pine Marten Return Problem: When a Mammal Recolonises and Nobody Notices
Pine martens are recovering through natural spread and reintroductions, but they're elusive and roughly the size of a small cat, so your chances of actually seeing one remain somewhere between slim and extremely slim.
North Country Cheviot
The North Country Cheviot is a white-faced, alert hill breed with Hill and Park types. The Hill or Lairg type was developed in Sutherland; the larger Park type in Caithness. Males can occasionally be horned under the UK standard.
