But height is a bit of a trick. If you’re standing on a high plateau and walk up a thirty-foot slope to a summit, you haven't really climbed a mountain; you’ve just finished a walk.

The Birth of the List

The classification didn't appear out of thin air. It was a reaction to the existing lists that dominated the 20th century. For a hundred years, the Munros—Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet (914.4m)—were the primary focus. But the Munros are limited to Scotland, and the "tops" on that list are often subjective.

In 1992, Alan Dawson published The Relative Hills of Britain. He introduced the Marilyn as a punning contrast to the Munro. If you have a Munro (referencing Sir Hugh Munro), then why not a Marilyn (referencing Marilyn Monroe)? It’s a bit of dry, British humour that has stuck for over thirty years.

What Dawson created was a purely mathematical list. By stripping away the subjective nature of what "feels" like a mountain, he created a list that covers every corner of the British Isles. It brought hills in the South of England, the lowlands of Ireland, and the sea stacks of the Atlantic into the same conversation as the giants of the Highlands.

The Logic of the 150-Metre Drop

To understand a Marilyn, you have to understand prominence. Imagine you are standing on the summit of a hill. To get to a higher point, you have to go down first. The lowest point you have to reach before you can start climbing something higher is called the "col" or the "key col." The vertical distance between the summit and that col is the prominence.

This creates some interesting situations where famous, high-altitude peaks simply don't make the cut. Take Bow Fell (923m / 3,028ft) in the Lake District. It’s an iconic, rocky skyline, but because the drop to the col connecting it to Esk Pike is only about 147 metres (482ft), it fails the Marilyn test by a whisker. In the Highlands, you see this constantly. Lurg Mhòr (986m / 3,235ft) is a massive, remote mountain, but its neighbour Meall Buidhe is technically just a "top" because the ridge between them doesn't dip deep enough. You are standing at nearly a thousand metres, yet you aren't on a Marilyn.

On the other side of the coin, you have hills like Moel Famau in North Wales. It’s only 554 metres (1,818ft) high, which isn't huge by Alpine standards, but because it drops away significantly into the Clwydian Range, it’s a major Marilyn.

The "Ten-Centimetre War" and Reclassifications

Because the list is based on precise math, it is subject to change as technology improves. In the early days, we relied on OS maps with 5-metre or 10-metre contour lines. Today, we have GPS and laser-levelling.

This has led to what enthusiasts sometimes call the "Ten-Centimetre War." There have been several hills that were thought to have exactly 150 metres of drop, only for a modern survey to find they actually have 149.9 metres. When that happens, the hill is demoted to a "Sub-Marilyn" (hills with 140m–149m of drop).

A classic example is Seana Bhraigh in the Highlands. For years, there was debate about whether it met the criteria. Precision surveying is the only way to settle these disputes, and for the people who keep the records, these tiny margins are the difference between a hill being "independent" or just a part of its neighbour. Another famous casualty was Beinn an t-Sìthein near Strathyre; it was a Marilyn for years until a high-accuracy survey found the col was slightly higher than mapped, stripping it of its status.

How Marilyns Differ from Other Lists

If you’ve spent time in the Lake District, you’ve heard of the Wainwrights. Those are based on Alfred Wainwright’s personal choice of 214 fells. There is no math involved; if he liked the view and thought it was a distinct fell, it went in the book.

Then you have the Munros, which are about absolute height (3,000ft+).

The Marilyns are different because they are about the shape of the Earth’s crust. Because there are over 1,500 in Great Britain alone, it isn't a list that most people expect to finish. While people spend their weekends trying to finish the Munros, "ticking off" the Marilyns is usually a slower, more geographic exploration. You might find yourself in a field in Sussex one weekend and on a cliff edge in Shetland the next. It forces you to visit parts of the country that no other list would ever suggest.

Names and Origins: The Language of the Hills

One of the most rewarding parts of studying this classification is seeing how the names describe the physical reality of the ground. The names aren't random; they are ancient descriptions.

Beinn / Binn: You’ll see this across Scotland and Ireland. It’s Gaelic for mountain or pinnacle. Ben Nevis (Beinn Nibheis) is often translated as the "Venomous Mountain," likely referring to the treacherous weather or the sheer scale of its north face.
Moel: In Wales, you’ll find many "Moels." It means bare or bald. When you stand on Moel Famau (Mother’s Hill), you see exactly why—it’s a rounded, grass-topped height that lacks the craggy peaks of Snowdonia further west.
Meall: Often used in the Highlands for a rounded, lumpy hill. A hill like Meall nan Tarmachan (Hill of the Ptarmigans) at 1,044 metres (3,425ft) is a Marilyn that feels exactly like its name—a big, bulky mass of high ground.
Sgùrr: This indicates a sharp, rocky peak. The Inaccessible Pinnacle is part of Sgùrr Dearg (The Red Peak), which perfectly describes the jagged, volcanic nature of the Black Cuillin on Skye.
Fell: Derived from the Old Norse fjall. It’s ubiquitous in the Lake District and the Pennines. Mickle Fell (the highest point in County Durham at 788m / 2,585ft) uses the Norse mikill for "great" or "large," describing the sprawling limestone plateau that forms this Marilyn.

The Extremes: From the Highest to the Lowest

The diversity of the list is best seen in its extremes.

At the top, we have Ben Nevis. At 1,345 metres (4,413ft), it is the highest point in the British Isles and has a massive prominence, as the ground drops all the way to sea level at Fort William.

The lowest Marilyn in the British Isles is Maol Domhnaich (Muldoanich), a small, uninhabited island in the Outer Hebrides. It stands at just 154 metres (505ft). Because it rises directly from the Atlantic, its prominence is identical to its height.

In England, the title of "lowest" belongs to Arnside Knott in Cumbria. At 159 metres (522ft), it is a modest hill that dominates the landscape around the River Kent. While it was missed in the original 1992 survey, a 2010 precision survey confirmed it had a prominence of 150.8 metres, making it the shortest Marilyn on the English mainland. These peaks prove that the list isn't about how close you are to the clouds, but how much you dominate your immediate surroundings.

If you are looking to explore this classification, you need to be aware that "Marilyn" does not mean "easy walk."

The Dangerous Peaks

The most notorious Marilyn is the Inaccessible Pinnacle (The In Pinn) on the Isle of Skye. It is a blade of rock sitting atop Sgùrr Dearg. While the mountain itself is a Marilyn, the true summit is the top of this rock fin. Unlike almost every other hill in the UK, you cannot walk up this. You need to be able to rock climb (Abseil skills are also required to get down). Do not attempt this without a guide or significant climbing experience.

Similarly, the Marilyns on the St Kilda archipelago—Hirta (430m / 1,411ft) and Boreray (384m / 1,260ft)—are among the most difficult to reach in the world. They involve landing a boat on slick, wave-lashed rocks and climbing near-vertical grass slopes. They are beautiful, but they are unforgiving.

The High-Profile Reclassifications

Keep an eye on Knight’s Peak and other summits in the Cuillin. Frequent re-surveys mean the list is living. Some hills are added when a new col is measured, while others disappear. Understanding the "sub-Marilyns" is often the best way to understand the main list; these are the hills that almost made it, and they often offer the same physical challenge and views as their "official" cousins.

Why the "Lumps" Matter

Don't ignore the low-level hills like Leith Hill in Surrey (294m / 965ft). It is the highest point in South East England and a significant Marilyn. These "lumps" are essential for understanding the geography of the UK.
