About this Route
This GPX climbs Hedgehope Hill from Langleeford in the Harthope Valley and returns the same way. It covers 8.6 km with about 535 m of ascent, taking around 4 to 5½ hours. Hedgehope is lower than neighbouring Cheviot but steeper, with a sustained climb over rough grass and moorland.
From the parking area near Langleeford, follow the valley path and cross Harthope Burn by the footbridge. The route begins climbing almost immediately, working onto the ridge by Housey Crags. Continue over increasingly open ground towards Long Crags, then follow the broad ridge to Hedgehope Hill. The final slopes are steep and often wet before the summit trig point at 714 m. Views stretch across the Cheviots and towards the coast on a clear day.
Return by exactly the same route over Long Crags and Housey Crags. This GPX does not continue across Comb Fell to The Cheviot. The upper ridge is exposed and cloud removes many useful landmarks, while peat and wet grass make the descent slippery. Some local signs restrict dogs on parts of the access land; follow every notice, even if your dog is normally kept on a lead.
Hedgehope has steeper sides than the taller but flatter-topped Cheviot.

Route Waypoints
Start from the small parking area in the Harthope Valley. Space is limited, so park tightly and keep gates and passing places clear.
Cross the minor road bridge, then take the path towards Harthope Burn as shown by the GPX.
Cross the burn on the footbridge and turn onto the steep rising path. Do not attempt a ford when water is high.
Climb past the crags onto open ridge ground. The path is steep and can be badly eroded.
Continue over the broadening ridge. Check the return line here before the summit disappears into cloud.
Tackle the final steep grass and peat. Use the established path and avoid widening wet sections.
Reach the trig point at 714 m. Stop here; Comb Fell and The Cheviot are outside this GPX.
Retrace Long Crags, Housey Crags and both bridges to the valley parking area.
Essential Tips
Signs may prohibit dogs on parts of the route, particularly for conservation or livestock. Obey local notices without exception.
Wet grass and peat make the return from Hedgehope awkward. Use poles if helpful and keep a controlled pace.
The ridge beyond Hedgehope creates a much longer and rougher circuit. This GPX returns to Langleeford.
Parking is informal and limited. Never block passing places, farm entrances or emergency access.
