About this Route

This GPX follows the Simonside escarpment from Lordenshaws, visiting the ridge and summit before returning on the same broad route. It covers 7.1 km with about 333 m of ascent, usually taking 2½ to 4 hours. The forest tracks are easy to follow, while the sandstone steps and open moorland ridge are rougher and exposed.

Begin near the Lordenshaws hillfort and follow the path towards the forest. Use the red waymarkers where the route joins Forestry England's Simonside Ridge Walk. The trail climbs through woodland before emerging below the crags. Stone steps and rocky ground lead onto the ridge, with views north to the Cheviots and east towards the coast. Continue to Simonside's 430 m summit and the ancient cairns nearby.

Return towards Lordenshaws using the GPX and red markers where present. This file is not identical to every Forestry England circular and should not be confused with unwaymarked forest tracks. Archaeological remains around Lordenshaws and the summit are protected, while the heather moor is vulnerable to fire. Do not light stoves or barbecues, keep dogs close and carry a map for junctions beyond the marked trail.

The sandstone ridge is the best part of the walk, with the Cheviots on one side and the coast on the other.

Protect archaeological sites

Lordenshaws and the ridge contain ancient remains. Do not climb banks, move stones or disturb cairns.

Prevent moorland fire

Barbecues, campfires and stoves are prohibited. Take all litter home and report smoke promptly.

Watch wet sandstone

Rock steps become slick after rain or frost. Use footwear with grip and descend carefully.
