The Code itself is guidance, but some behaviours it covers are offences. Livestock worrying and littering can lead to prosecution. In England and Wales, a farmer or authorised person has a defence for injuring or killing a dog only in strict livestock-protection circumstances.

Should I close gates behind me when walking in the countryside?

Leave gates as you find them—if it's open, leave it open; if it's closed, close it behind you. Farmers leave gates in particular states for a reason, usually to keep livestock where they're supposed to be, and getting it wrong can cause animals to escape.

Do I need to keep my dog on a lead in the countryside?

Keep dogs on a lead around livestock and ground-nesting birds. On open access land in England and Wales, dogs must be on a short lead between 1 March and 31 July, and at all times near livestock. Elsewhere, follow local signs and keep your dog under effective control.
