About Haycock

Haycock is a massive, stony dome that feels genuinely remote compared to its more famous neighbours. It is a long trek from any valley, but the climb via Ennerdale offers a rugged, quiet experience with impressive, unobstructed views across the Western Fells.

Did You Know?

  • The name Haycock is a literal English description of the fell's profile, which resembles a traditional conical pile of hay once common in Lakeland farming.
  • A massive dry stone wall runs directly over the summit, a testament to 19th-century labourers who hauled stone up to 797 metres to mark the boundary between Ennerdale and Wasdale.
  • The summit is composed of Ennerdale Granophyre, an igneous rock formed 450 million years ago that creates a rugged, boulder-strewn plateau requiring careful footwork.
  • To the northwest sits Little Gowder Crag, a secondary summit that offers some of the best-preserved glacial moraines in the district, showing exactly where the ice once stalled.
  • Because the summit is such a broad, featureless dome, navigating in the mist often leads to hikers following the boundary wall with total confidence—only to realise they've descended into the entirely wrong valley.
