About Allen Crags

Allen Crags is the high-altitude transit hub of the Southern Fells, typically treated as a rocky speed bump by those charging toward Scafell Pike. It offers spectacular views of Great Gable and provides a rare moment of relative peace before the inevitable crowds at Esk Hause.

Geology
Under your boots at Allen Crags, you’re stepping on the Esk Pike Sandstone Formation, a thick layer of ancient volcanic ash mixed with mud that has solidified into a soft, layered rock. We don’t know exactly how old that bed is, but it’s the foundation that gives the fell its gentle slopes.

Did You Know?

  • Allen Crags serves as a vital geographical pivot, marking the point where the ridges of Borrowdale, Langdale, and Eskdale converge. It effectively functions as the central hub for the most dramatic scenery in the Lake District.
  • The summit is primarily composed of rugged volcanic rock from the Borrowdale Volcanic Group, which creates its characteristically splintered profile. Numerous small, crystalline tarns are tucked away in the hollows around the summit, reflecting the neighboring peaks.
  • Alfred Wainwright highly regarded the ridge walk between this fell and Glaramara, noting its undulating terrain and consistently excellent ground. It remains one of the most pleasurable high-level traverses for those who enjoy rock-hopping over bog-trotting.
  • Because of its height and central position, the fell offers a unique insider's view of the Scafell massif's complex crags. It allows you to see the immense scale of the surrounding giants without actually being stuck in their deep shadows.
  • Most hikers only visit the summit because they’ve overshot the path to Esk Hause while distracted by their own heavy breathing. If you find yourself here unexpectedly, just pretend you meant to do it and enjoy your sandwich in dignified confusion.
