About Dow Crag

One of the Southern Fells' most dramatic summits, this rugged peak is defined by the sheer rhyolite precipices of its eastern face. While rock climbers frequent the buttresses below, walkers are rewarded with a narrow, rocky crest offering a spectacular perspective across Goat's Water toward the Old Man of Coniston.

Did You Know?

  • The name originally referred only to the formidable eastern cliffs; the fell itself had no distinct name before the rise of Victorian hillwalking. Locally, the name is still often pronounced 'Doe,' reflecting its historical spelling.
  • Alfred Wainwright held the fell in high esteem, describing its eastern face as the finest feature in the Coniston range. He particularly recommended the approach from Walna Scar to appreciate the dark, vertical scale of the buttresses.
  • As a premier rock-climbing venue, the crag’s five main buttresses have been central to the sport since the 19th century. Early pioneers like the Abraham brothers established classic routes here, such as New Climb, long before modern protection was available.
  • The summit offers a stark contrast in views: to the west lies the quiet, pastoral Duddon Valley and the distant Scafell massif, while the view east drops 200 metres straight down into the dark, boulder-strewn bowl of Goat’s Water.
  • Despite its fearsome reputation among climbers, the summit can be reached via a remarkably civilized stroll from the west—a geographical bait-and-switch that allows hikers to claim a mountaineer's peak with minimal perspiration.
