Did You Know?
- •Your main view is dominated by Devoke Water, which holds the title for the largest tarn in the entire Lake District. Despite its size, it retains a wild, remote feel that perfectly matches the surrounding moorland.
- •Look out for the distinctive two-storey boathouse on the lake's shore; it’s a famous local landmark. It's not just for boats either, as it also serves as a handy mountain refuge for walkers caught in a squall.
- •The fell is part of the sprawling and wonderfully atmospheric Birker Fell, a huge expanse of moorland between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley. It's a real paradise for walkers who prefer solitude and wide-open spaces to ticking off busy peaks.
- •The waters below are a popular spot for anglers, managed by the Millom Anglers club. The tarn is regularly stocked with brown trout, so don't be surprised to see someone patiently casting a line from the shore.
- •The water leaving the tarn has a long journey ahead of it. It flows out via Linbeck Gill, which eventually joins the famous River Esk on its way to the Irish Sea at historic Ravenglass.
