About White Stones - The Band

Located on the popular ridge of The Band, this rocky Birkett summit provides an excellent vantage point over Great Langdale. While often bypassed by those heading for the higher peaks of Bowfell and Crinkle Crags, its namesake pale boulders offer a fine place to pause and admire the Langdale Pikes.

Did You Know?

  • The name is purely descriptive of the pale, weathered volcanic rock found at the summit, which stands out against the surrounding fellside grass and peat.
  • White Stones sits on the broad shoulder known as The Band, a significant geological spur that separates the glacial troughs of Mickleden and Oxendale.
  • The summit offers a front-row seat for observing climbers on Gimmer Crag, the sheer precipice on the side of Loft Crag directly across the valley.
  • While it is not one of Alfred Wainwright’s 214 fells, it was included by Bill Birkett in his influential 'Complete Lakeland Fells' and by Timothy Synge in his list of Lake District peaks.
  • It serves as a useful psychological milestone for walkers, marking the point where the relentless initial pull out of Langdale finally begins to level off before the final ascent of Bowfell.
