• •The name derives from the Middle English 'shelter', referring to the natural recesses and rocky overhangs found along this fractured ridge. These features historically provided essential lee from prevailing winds for shepherds moving flocks between Wasdale and Langdale.
• •While it was not given its own chapter by Alfred Wainwright, it is recognised as a Nuttall and a Synge, making it a necessary detour for peak-baggers exploring the high-level link between the Scafell massif and the Coniston Fells.
• •The summit sits directly above the Three Tarns col; while many walkers stick to the eroded path that skirts the western flank, the true top requires a brief, rewarding scramble over the rhyolite—a hard, fine-grained volcanic rock typical of this area.
• •The summit provides a unique perspective of the Great Slab on Bowfell to the north, a massive tilted plane of rock that looks almost artificial in its regularity, contrasted against the deep, wild trench of Lingcove Beck to the west.
