About Lowthwaite Fell

Sitting quietly within the smooth, grassy folds of the Uldale Fells, this rounded summit offers a sense of space often missing from the busier central Lakes. Frequently reached via old tracks from the north, it provides a superb, uncluttered vantage point overlooking the Solway Firth and the distant Scottish hills of Galloway.

Did You Know?

  • The name Lowthwaite is rooted in Old Norse, combining lágr (low) and thveit (a clearing). It describes a low-lying meadow or woodland clearing, a common naming convention for farming settlements established in the Lake District by Viking settlers.
  • Though excluded from Alfred Wainwright’s primary volumes, Lowthwaite Fell is recognised as a Birkett and a Synge, sitting as a high point on the long ridge that connects Longlands Fell to the higher slopes of Little Calva.
  • The summit provides a distinct perspective on the 'Back o' Skiddaw', where the massive northern bulk of Skiddaw and the steep-sided pyramid of Great Calva look significantly more imposing than they do from the southern tourist paths.
  • Much of the approach from the north follows ancient tracks that once served the mining industry in the nearby Caldbeck Fells, though the terrain on the fell itself is predominantly smooth grass and heather.
  • The lack of a Wainwright classification acts as a natural filter; you are significantly more likely to encounter a stray Herdwick sheep than a fellow walker on this quiet northern outlier.
