Did You Know?

  • The name Hobcarton likely derives from the Old English 'hop', meaning a small enclosed valley, and 'tun', a farmstead. It refers to the deep, glacial glen that drops away sharply from the northern face of the ridge.
  • While Alfred Wainwright did not grant this summit its own chapter, treating it as a shoulder of Grisedale Pike, he specifically praised the 'boldness of the crags' here and the dramatic plunge into the valley below.
  • The vertical face of the crag is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), protected for its rare mountain flora such as the alpine cinquefoil, which clings to the damp, inaccessible ledges.
  • Looking north-west from the summit, the view is perfectly framed by the steep walls of the glen, leading the eye directly over the dark plantations of Whinlatter Forest toward the distant hills of Galloway in Scotland.
  • For those ticking off lists, the summit is conveniently located on one of the Lake District’s finest ridge walks, meaning most walkers bag this Hewitt by accident while heading for its more famous neighbours.
