About Great Lingy Hill
Situated on the expansive moorland south of High Pike, this rounded Nuttall is defined by its wild, peat-hued character. Its slopes are heavy with the heather that earns its name, offering a lonely, windswept perspective of the Skiddaw massif and the distant Solway Firth to the north.

Did You Know?
- •The name derives from the Old Norse 'lyng', referring to the common heather that dominates the fellside. The 'Great' prefix is a relative term used to distinguish it from the slightly lower Little Lingy Hill to the north.
- •The summit is home to the Lingy Hut, a small wooden bothy. Originally a shooting hut, it now provides a primitive but welcome refuge for walkers on the Cumbria Way, which passes close to the summit.
- •Though Alfred Wainwright did not grant this hill its own chapter, treating it as a subsidiary of High Pike, it is classified as a Birkett and a Nuttall, appealing to those exploring the quieter 'Back o' Skiddaw' fells.
- •The summit offers an excellent vantage point to appreciate the scale of the Grainsgill Lead Mine area to the east, once one of the most productive mineral sites in the Caldbeck Fells.
- •The view northwards is remarkably far-reaching for a hill of this height, stretching beyond the village of Caldbeck to the Southern Uplands of Scotland across the Solway Plain.
