About Carron Crag

Standing as the highest point in Grizedale Forest, this rocky, heather-clad summit breaks clear of the surrounding timber. It offers a rugged perspective on the Southern Fells, with an exceptional view across the valley to the Coniston Old Man and the long reach of Windermere to the east.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely derives from the Old Norse 'kjarr', meaning brushwood or marshy ground, combined with the Celtic-influenced 'crag' for a rocky outcrop—a fitting description for a peak that rises sharply out of the Grizedale plantations.
  • Alfred Wainwright included this summit in his 'Outlying Fells of Lakeland', praising the summit's rocky nature and its 'magnificent' panoramic view which compensates for the enclosed feeling of the forest tracks below.
  • The summit is a key destination within the Grizedale Forest sculpture trail; the surrounding woodland has hosted numerous site-specific art installations since the project began in 1977.
  • The panoramic view from the top is one of the best for understanding the geography of the southern Lakes, clearly showing the contrast between the high fells of Coniston to the west and the gentler Silurian hills to the east.
  • Navigating the dense network of forestry tracks on the lower slopes can be more taxing on the brain than the legs; it is surprisingly easy to add several miles to your day by missing a single, inconspicuous wooden signpost.
