About Beann Bhan

Tucked away at the western edge of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, this sandstone Tump rises steeply above the Glencar valley. Its rugged, grassy slopes offer a quieter alternative to the high central peaks, providing a commanding vantage point over Lough Acoose and the dramatic, jagged profile of the Caher ridge to the east.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish Beann Bhán, meaning 'White Peak,' likely a reference to the weathered Old Red Sandstone that crops out across its upper slopes.
  • Positioned as a western outlier to the main range, the summit offers an exceptional view of the Reeks' horseshoe, particularly the steep ascent to Caher and the 1,038m summit of Carrauntoohil beyond.
  • The hill's proximity to Glencar makes it a prominent landmark for those walking the Kerry Way, though its summit sits just off the main waymarked trail.
  • At 459 metres, it is modest by Reeks standards, though the lack of a formal path ensures a degree of solitude rarely found on the busier peaks just a few kilometres to the east.
