About Caher

Standing as Ireland’s third-highest peak, this stony giant anchors the western end of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks. It is most frequently visited as part of the spectacular Coomloughra Horseshoe. The summit offers a rugged perspective over the deep hollow of Coomloughra and the sharp, narrow ridges leading toward Carrauntoohil.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish Cathair na Féinne, which translates as the 'stone fort of the Fianna,' referring to the mythical band of warriors led by Fionn mac Cumhaill.
  • At exactly 1,000 metres, it is one of only three mountains in Ireland to reach the four-figure mark, standing as a formidable neighbour to Carrauntoohil and Beenkeragh.
  • It forms a key part of the Coomloughra Horseshoe, often serving as the first major peak for walkers ascending via the steep Hydro Road route from the west.
  • The summit offers a peerless view of the Coomloughra and Curraghmore lakes sitting in the glaciated valleys below, with the jagged profile of the Bone Ridge visible to the east.
  • Despite its significant height, many walkers treat the summit as little more than a convenient waypoint or a final leg-stretching hurdle during the long descent from Carrauntoohil.
