About Caher West Top

Situated on the western fringes of the Reeks, this sharp, narrow peak offers a rugged perspective of the Coomloughra Horseshoe. While a subsidiary summit of Caher, its airy position provides dramatic views down into the glacially-carved Coomloughra Glen and across the deep gap to the massive bulk of Carrauntoohil.

Did You Know?

  • The Irish name, Cathair na Féinne, translates to the 'stone fort of the Fianna,' referencing the legendary band of warriors from Irish mythology led by Fionn mac Cumhaill.
  • From this high vantage point, the view to the west opens up toward the Dingle Peninsula and the Atlantic, while the precipitous northern slopes look directly down into the dark waters of Lough Eighter.
  • The peak is a vital component of the Coomloughra Horseshoe, a classic high-altitude circuit that traverses the three highest mountains in Ireland around a spectacular glacial amphitheatre.
  • It is essentially a high point on the narrow, rocky spine extending from the main summit of Caher, requiring a steady head for heights as the ground falls away sharply on both sides of the ridge.
  • On a typical Kerry day, the 'view' is often a choice between a thick grey mist and a slightly thinner grey mist, though the sudden clearing of the clouds usually reveals a drop that will immediately correct any posture issues.
