About Coomcallee

Situated on the rugged Iveragh Peninsula, this Hewitt commands the skyline south of Lough Currane. Its steep, grassy slopes lead to an expansive summit plateau, offering a sense of isolation characteristic of the Kerry wilds. Hikers are rewarded with a dramatic perspective over the Atlantic and the neighbouring peaks of the Dunkerron range.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish 'Com Caillí', meaning the 'Hollow of the Hag'. In Gaelic folklore, the Cailleach is a divine crone often credited with shaping the mountains and valleys of the west coast.
  • The summit is a primary vantage point for viewing the Skellig Islands to the west, while the jagged silhouette of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks dominates the eastern horizon beyond the Inny Valley.
  • It is frequently climbed as part of a high-level horseshoe route that includes Teermoyle Mountain, circling the deep glacial corries that sit above the coastal village of Waterville.
  • The lower slopes contain several archaeological remains, including ancient stone field systems and 'booley' huts, which were used by seasonal herders moving cattle to higher summer pastures.
  • While it qualifies as a Hump due to its prominence, the local terrain ensures that your boots will likely have gained several pounds of Kerry peat before you reach the actual summit cairn.
