About Slievenashaska South Top
Rising above the rugged interior of the south Iveragh Peninsula, this sedge-covered shoulder offers a quiet, pathless alternative to the busier Kerry peaks. Sitting south of the main summit, the terrain is characterized by peat hags and rocky outcrops, looking down toward the waters of the Kenmare River and Ballinskelligs Bay.

Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Irish Sliabh na Seisce, meaning 'mountain of the sedge,' a reference to the coarse, tufted marsh grass that thrives on these damp, peaty slopes.
- •The peak sits on the southern rim of the Coomura River valley, part of the rugged 'Wild West' of the Iveragh interior where established paths are virtually non-existent.
- •To the south, the summit offers an excellent perspective over the Kenmare River and across to the Beara Peninsula, with the Slieve Miskish Mountains visible on the distant horizon.
- •With a prominence of roughly 36 metres above the col connecting it to its parent peak, it qualifies as a Tump, a classification for hills with at least a 30-metre drop on all sides.
- •Considering the name translates to 'Mountain of the Sedge,' any walker surprised to find themselves standing ankle-deep in bog water has clearly failed to check the etymology.
