About Coomnahorna [Coomcallee East Top] [Com na hEorna]

This rugged shoulder on the southern Iveragh Peninsula serves as a high satellite to the more prominent Coomcallee. Typical of the Kerry highlands, its terrain is a mix of damp peat and sandstone outcrops. The summit offers a commanding view across the Kenmare River to the distinctive peaks of the Beara Peninsula.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a corruption of the Irish Com na hEorna, which translates as the 'hollow of the barley'. This likely refers to the sheltered corries beneath the ridge where the microclimate may have once permitted the growth of crops that would otherwise fail on the exposed Iveragh heights.
  • Walkers usually reach this summit as part of a high-level traverse from Sneem, linking it with Coomcallee to create a circuit that overlooks the vast, water-filled basins of Lough Currane and Lough Derriana to the west.
  • On a clear day, the northern horizon is dominated by the sharp, dark profile of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, providing a grandstand view of Carrauntoohil across the Iveragh interior.
  • While officially classified as both a Hump and a Tump, the ascent through the lower-lying Kerry bog suggests that a classification for 'unrelenting dampness' would be equally appropriate.
