About Stob Coire Sgriodain South Top

Resting on the long, high-altitude spine above the deep waters of Loch Treig, this Munro Top offers a rugged, airy vantage point. While often bypassed for the main summit, its rocky terrain provides a dramatic perspective down the loch toward the remote Corrour estate and the massive peaks of the Easains.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Stob Coire Sgriodain', which translates as the ‘peak of the corrie of scree’, referencing the steep, stony slopes that fall away from the ridge toward the glen.
  • As a Munro Top, it sits just over a kilometre south of its parent peak and is almost always climbed as part of the classic high-level circuit from Fersit that includes Chno Dearg.
  • The summit offers an exceptional view across the deep trough of Loch Treig to the twin peaks of Stob a' Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain, which dominate the western horizon.
  • Looking south, you can trace the West Highland Line as it clings to the hillside above the loch, marking one of the loneliest and most scenic stretches of railway in the UK.
  • Despite its 958-metre elevation, many walkers treat the South Top as little more than a scenic balcony for lunch, often more focused on the water levels of the loch below than the cairn itself.
