About Chno Dearg

Rising above the remote waters of Loch Treig, this Munro is a vast, rounded mass of grassy slopes and high stony plateau. While its form is bulky rather than rugged, the sense of isolation is profound. It offers a straightforward ascent from Tulloch, frequently paired with its sharper neighbour, Stob Coire Sgriodain.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Red Nut.' While 'dearg' (red) refers to the tint of the grasses and granite, 'chno' (a corruption of cnu) is a descriptive term for its rounded, nut-like shape when viewed from a distance.
  • Its position on the eastern side of Loch Treig provides an exceptional perspective of the 'Easains'—Stob a' Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain—rising steeply across the deep glacial trench of the glen.
  • It is almost always climbed in tandem with its southern neighbour, Stob Coire Sgriodain; the contrast between Chno Dearg’s broad, rolling plateau and the rocky, shattered eastern face of the Stob is one of the day's highlights.
  • The lower slopes are a masterclass in Scottish bog-management, requiring a dedicated zigzag approach to avoid disappearing into the sphagnum before you finally reach the firmer, stony ground of the summit plateau.
