Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Stob Coire Sgreamhach', which translates as the 'Peak of the Dreadful Corrie'. This likely refers to the steep, craggy, and often intimidating nature of the surrounding slopes which drop precipitously into the glens below.
  • This Munro is the constant companion of Bidean nam Bian, the highest point in the former county of Argyll. The two are joined by the Bealach Dearg, a high mountain pass characterized by its distinctive red scree.
  • The hill sits directly above Coire Gabhail, better known as the 'Lost Valley'. In the 17th century, the MacDonalds of Glencoe used this deep, hidden hanging valley to hide rustled cattle, as its entrance is concealed from the main glen by massive rockfall debris.
  • The summit provides one of the best vantage points for looking down the length of Glen Etive toward the sea loch, while also offering a perspective of the Three Sisters of Glencoe from an unfamiliar, elevated angle.
  • Despite being over 1,000 metres high, the summit area is surprisingly narrow and rocky, providing a sharp mountain profile that contrasts with the broader, grassy plateaus found in the eastern Grampians.
  • The descent from the Bealach Dearg into the Lost Valley is a legendary test of footwear; the path consists of a steep, shifting staircase of loose stones that ensures most walkers finish the day with at least half a pound of Glencoe rhyolite inside their socks.
