About Stob Coire nan Easain

Rising steeply above the northern end of Loch Sloy, this rugged summit offers a wilder, quieter alternative to the nearby Arrochar Munros. The terrain is characteristically rough and rocky, requiring careful navigation through the crags and bogs that define this high, atmospheric corner of the Southern Highlands.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Stob Coire nan Easain', which translates as the 'Peak of the Corrie of the Little Waterfalls'. This refers to the numerous burns that drain the mountain’s steep, rocky eastern slopes into the glen below.
  • It sits on the high, convoluted ridge north of Ben Sloy. While often bypassed by those heading for the 3,000ft peaks, it serves as an excellent vantage point for inspecting the rugged eastern face of Ben Lui across the head of Glen Fyne.
  • The summit provides an intimate look at the Loch Sloy hydro-electric scheme's upper reaches; the dam was the first major project of its kind in Scotland, opened by Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) in 1950.
  • The view to the east is dominated by the massive, steep-sided bulk of Ben Vorlich, while looking south provides a clear perspective of the rocky prow of Ben Sloy and the distant, jagged skyline of the Cobbler.
  • The 'Little Waterfalls' mentioned in its name are beautiful to look at, though they generally spend most of a wet afternoon trying to find a route through the Gore-Tex of your gaiters.
