About Sgurr na Ruaidhe

As the easternmost of the four Strathfarrar Munros, this hill serves as a relatively gentle introduction to a high-altitude circuit. Its rounded, grassy slopes offer straightforward walking compared to its more rugged neighbours, leading to a sprawling summit plateau that provides a grandstand view over the remote Glen Strathfarrar.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Sgùrr na Ruaidhe, meaning 'Peak of the Redness,' likely referring to the distinctive russet hue the grassy slopes take on during the autumn months when the deer grass turns.
  • Access to the hill is usually via the private road in Glen Strathfarrar; vehicle entry is managed by a gatekeeper with strictly controlled seasonal hours, requiring walkers to plan their day with significant precision.
  • From the summit cairn, the view east is particularly expansive, looking past the lower hills of the Aigas Forest toward the distant, shimmering waters of the Moray Firth.
  • While its western neighbours boast dramatic rocky corries, this peak is defined by an extensive, mossy summit plateau that makes for uncharacteristically easy walking at nearly 1,000 metres of elevation.
  • It is frequently described as the easiest Munro of the Strathfarrar group, a label that feels slightly less generous when you are facing the final miles of the long walk back to the glen floor.
