Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Garbh', meaning rough or rugged, and 'chàrn', meaning a cairn or stony hill, which accurately describes the shattered quartzite and sandstone blocks that dominate the upper slopes.
  • This hill is the primary summit of Beinn Dearg Bheag and is almost always climbed in tandem with its slightly higher neighbour, Beinn Dearg Mhòr; the two are linked by a dramatic high-level col known as the Cadha na Beic.
  • From the summit, the view north across the deep trench of Loch na Sealga to the great Torridon sandstone fortress of An Teallach is widely considered one of the most spectacular mountain vistas in the British Isles.
  • Located in what is known as 'The Great Wilderness', the hill requires a significant logistical effort to reach, usually involving a long approach from Corrie Hallie and an overnight stay at the remote Shenavall bothy.
  • Despite the name suggesting a single 'rough cairn,' visitors will find that the mountain is essentially one giant, unstable pile of rocks held together by sheer gravity and optimism.
