About Meall a' Gheur-fheadain

Rising to the north of the Munro Meall a’ Chrasgaidh, this rugged Tump offers a quieter vantage point within the Fannichs. Its heathery slopes overlook the deep indentation of Loch Broom, providing a superb perspective of the Coigach peaks and the jagged ridge of An Teallach across the glen.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Meall a' Gheur-fheadain, which translates as the 'hill of the sharp or narrow streamlet.' This likely refers to the steep, incised burn that drains its northern face towards the Allt na h-Iùbhraich.
  • While often bypassed by those focused on the main Fannichs ridge, the summit provides one of the best viewpoints in the area for looking directly down the length of Loch Broom towards the white houses of Ullapool.
  • The hill is separated from the higher ground to the south by a col at approximately 690 metres, making it a natural extension for walkers descending from Meall a' Chrasgaidh towards the A832.
  • Standing at 754 metres, it falls just eight metres short of the 762-metre threshold required for Corbett status, a narrow margin that ensures it remains blissfully overlooked by most peak-baggers.
