About Creag Ghlas

Rising as a distinct shoulder on the long eastern ridge of the Munro Lurg Mhòr, this high top overlooks the remote waters of Loch Monar. Its terrain is typical of the Monar forest—steep, grassy slopes broken by grey schist outcrops, offering a wild, secluded feel far from the nearest road.

Did You Know?

  • The name Creag Ghlas is Scottish Gaelic for 'Grey Crag', a description of the weathered metamorphic schist that breaks through the thin soil on its upper slopes.
  • It is most frequently encountered by walkers tackling the 'Monar Munros' from the east, serving as the final significant climb before reaching the summit of Lurg Mhòr.
  • The summit offers a superb, direct line of sight down the length of Loch Monar, with the massive peaks of the Mullardoch range, including Sgùrr na Lapaich, framing the southern horizon.
  • Because it sits on one of the most remote ridges in the Highlands, reaching this point usually necessitates a fifteen-mile approach, often assisted by a mountain bike along the loch-side track from Monar Lodge.
  • It is the sort of peak that receives plenty of footfall from Munro baggers who are so focused on the horizon that they often forget they are standing on a separate summit at all.
