About Stuc Bheag

Hidden within the sprawling Sgùrr nan Ceathreamhnan massif, this rugged Munro Top sits far from any public road. Reaching its rocky summit requires a committed expedition into the North West Highlands’ wild interior. It offers an exceptional perspective on the complex, multi-ridged anatomy of its parent peak and the lonely, glaciated depths of Glen Elchaig.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Stuc Bheag, translating as the ‘Little Crag’. In Highland topography, a 'stuc' typically refers to a peak with a steep, rocky face or a prominent, jutting profile.
  • It is situated on the western arm of Sgùrr nan Ceathreamhnan, a mountain regarded as one of the most complex in Scotland due to its unique layout of radiating ridges. This makes the peak a common waypoint for those staying at the remote Alltbeithe youth hostel.
  • The summit provides a focused view west toward the massive, plateau-like bulk of Beinn Fhada, while the view north-west looks directly down the desolate Gleann Gaorsaic towards the distant peaks of the Mullach na Dheiragain ridge.
  • In a quirk of local nomenclature, Stuc Bheag (the 'Little Crag') stands at 1,075 metres, making it significantly higher than its neighbour to the east, Stuc Mòr (the 'Great Crag'), which only reaches 1,041 metres.
