About Carn Gorm

Acting as the western anchor for the celebrated Glen Lyon Horseshoe, this broad Munro offers a steady, grassy ascent from Invervar. The summit plateau provides an exceptional vantage point, looking directly across the glen to the Ben Lawers range and north toward the unmistakable, symmetrical cone of Schiehallion.

You’re walking on ancient seabed muds and volcanic rocks. Heat and pressure transformed these into the shiny, layered stones and tough, dark rocks that form this fell.

Did You Know?

  • The name Càrn Gorm is Gaelic for 'Blue Cairn.' In Highland toponymy, 'gorm' typically describes a dark, verdant green or the hazy blue-grey of a distant peak rather than a bright primary blue.
  • It is the first peak encountered on the classic four-Munro circuit of the Glen Lyon hills, usually followed by the stony ridges leading to Meall Garbh, Meall a' Bhurich, and Càrn Mairg.
  • The summit provides a clear sightline over the vast, empty expanse of Rannoch Moor towards the distant, jagged silhouettes of the Glencoe peaks and the Black Mount.
  • Ascents usually begin from the small car park at Invervar; walkers are frequently reminded by local signage to stick to the designated paths to protect the sensitive ecology of the lower wooded slopes.
  • While the name suggests a colourful landmark, the summit experience is more likely to involve navigating a sprawling field of grey stones while leaning into a persistent Perthshire wind.
