About Ben Vorlich South Top
Sitting on the long, rugged southern ridge of its Munro parent, this subsidiary peak offers a quieter perspective on the Arrochar Alps. The terrain is typical of the Loch Lomond hills—steep, heathery, and often boggy—but the reward is a dizzying, direct view down into the deep trench of the Loch itself.

Did You Know?
- •The name Vorlich derives from the Gaelic Beinn Mhùirich, usually translated as 'Hill of the Bay', a reference to the prominent curve of Loch Lomond at its foot.
- •Positioned on the ridge between the main summit and Inveruglas, the South Top provides one of the best vantage points for observing the industrial scale of the Loch Sloy hydro-electric scheme.
- •Looking south and west, the view is framed by the jagged silhouettes of the Arrochar Alps, specifically the distinctive 'triple-peak' profile of Ben Arthur, better known as The Cobbler.
- •While the main summit attracts the crowds, this top is often bypassed by those using the hydro-road, making it a peaceful spot to watch the Inversnaid ferry crossing the water far below.
- •It is a classic example of a Tump—a hill with a thirty-metre prominence—though most walkers only notice the thirty metres when they realize they have to climb them again on the return leg.
