About Ben Vorlich North Top

Situated at the northern end of a rugged ridge above Loch Lomond, this Munro Top offers a quieter perspective than its parent peak. The terrain is steep and grassy with occasional rocky outcrops, providing a fine vantage point over the head of the loch towards Ardlui and the distant Crianlarich Munros.

Did You Know?

  • The name comes from the Gaelic Beinn Mhùirlich, meaning 'mountain of the bay'. While the 'bay' likely refers to the curve of Loch Lomond at its foot, for the North Top, it marks the final high point of the ridge before it drops sharply toward the Glen Falloch woods.
  • Reaching this summit usually requires a detour from the main Ben Vorlich path, crossing a high, sometimes boggy col. It is a mandatory stop for those completing a full traverse of the ridge rather than the standard out-and-back from the Loch Sloy dam.
  • The summit offers an unobstructed look at the Loch Sloy hydro-electric scheme; the massive concrete buttresses of the dam, a major feat of post-war engineering, look surprisingly small from this 932-metre height.
  • Looking north, the view is framed by the massive silhouettes of An Caisteal and Cruach Ardrain, while the narrow ribbon of the A82 can be seen snaking through the valley floor far below.
  • It serves as an excellent spot to wait if the main summit is crowded, though in the Arrochar Alps, 'crowded' is a relative term usually involving three people and a wet dog.
