About Raven Crag

Tucked away in the quiet Far Eastern Fells, this 612-metre summit offers a rugged perspective on the deep trench of Longsleddale. Often overlooked for its higher neighbours, the top provides a peaceful vantage point over the rocky slopes of Tarn Crag and the remote head of the valley.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old Norse hrafn and Middle English krag, a common Lakeland pairing that denotes a steep rocky outcrop traditionally favoured as a nesting site for ravens.
  • Often confused with its lower, more famous namesake overlooking Thirlmere, this summit is actually a northern shoulder of Grey Crag, situated in the far more remote landscape above the head of Longsleddale.
  • The summit earns its place with a specific, framed view of the upper Sprint Valley, looking directly across to the impressive broken face of Tarn Crag and the sprawling mass of Harter Fell.
  • This hill is classified as a Synge, a list compiled by Tim Synge in his 1995 guide which highlights summits over 500 metres with at least 30 metres of prominence, often leading walkers to quieter corners of the fells.
  • With at least half a dozen Raven Crags scattered across the Lake District, it is the ideal peak for anyone who enjoys spending their post-walk pint explaining exactly which one they actually climbed.
