About Scar Lathing

Overlooking the deep trench of Wasdale, this Birkett is a rocky satellite shoulder of Middle Fell. Though modest in height, its position offers a front-row seat to the Scafell range across the valley. The terrain is typical of the western fells: steep, grassy slopes punctuated by small crags and bracken-covered banks.

Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in Old Norse, with 'scar' meaning a rocky cliff and 'lathing' likely derived from hlatha, referring to a barn or a place for storing fodder near the fell side.
  • Both Bill Birkett and Tim Synge included this summit in their respective guidebooks, highlighting it as a worthy viewpoint for those exploring the western fringes of the Southern Fells.
  • The summit offers a particularly sharp view of the Wastwater Screes across the lake, providing a better appreciation of their sheer angle than the view from the valley floor.
  • It is an ideal spot for watching the distant line of headlamps ascending Scafell Pike on a busy summer evening while remaining entirely undisturbed yourself.
