About Raven's Crag [nameless (Stickle Pike - Raven's Crag)]

Rising above the Duddon Valley, this rugged Wainwright Outlying Fell is often paired with its more prominent neighbour, Stickle Pike. Despite its modest height, the summit offers a wild, rocky character and a fine vantage point over the Dunnerdale Fells and the distant sands of the Duddon Estuary.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Old Norse 'hrafn' and the Celtic 'creag', denoting a steep, rocky outcrop favoured by ravens for nesting. While common across the Lake District, this Dunnerdale version is more secluded and intimate than its namesakes elsewhere.
  • Alfred Wainwright included this summit in his 1974 book, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, grouping it into a circular walk with Stickle Pike. He regarded the area as having a 'charming scenery' that rewards walkers with views far beyond its humble elevation.
  • Looking south-west from the summit rocks, the Duddon Estuary unfolds toward the Irish Sea, while the northern horizon is dominated by the sharp, pyramid-like peak of Caw and the high, craggy skyline of the Coniston Fells.
  • The most efficient ascent begins at the summit of the Kiln Bank Cross pass, following a short, steep trail through the bracken and outcrops that characterize the transition between the valley floor and the high fells.
  • While the name promises a brooding, gothic haunt for birds of prey, the modern reality usually involves sharing the summit with a few unimpressed Herdwick sheep.
