Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old Norse 'pík', meaning a pointed hill. While the summit plateau is relatively broad, the fell presents a much steeper, more traditional 'pike' profile when viewed from the depths of the Scandale valley to the east.
  • Alfred Wainwright regarded the summit as a premier spot for viewing Windermere, noting that the lake is visible in its entirety from this elevation, appearing as a long, silver ribbon stretching toward the coast.
  • The fell is a key milestone on the Fairfield Horseshoe, one of the most famous ridge walks in England. It is typically visited as the final or penultimate peak for those walking the circuit clockwise from Ambleside or Rydal.
  • A prominent drystone wall follows the ridge almost to the summit. These 'mountain walls' are a feat of Victorian engineering, built to manage grazing rights and prevent sheep from drifting between the Scandale and Rydal catchments.
  • The view to the west is particularly striking, offering a clear look at the distinctive profiles of Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle in the Langdale Pikes, framed against the higher backdrop of the Scafell massif.
  • The summit cairn is remarkably sturdy and tall, serving as a reliable navigational aid and windbreak for walkers who find themselves caught in the notorious 'Scandale mist' that often rolls over the ridge.
