About High Crag (Grisedale)

Situated on the high eastern rim of the Helvellyn range, this rugged shoulder towers over the head of Grisedale. While often bypassed on the main ridge path, its rocky edge offers a vertiginous perspective into Ruthwaite Cove and a clear, straight view down the valley towards the waters of Ullswater.

Did You Know?

  • The name is purely descriptive of its geography, referring to the steep, rocky escarpment that falls away from the Helvellyn massif into the depths of Grisedale. In the Lake District, 'crag' denotes a steep or precipitous rock face, a fitting label for this high-altitude eastern edge.
  • Despite standing at nearly 2,900 feet—taller than many more famous Lake District peaks—it was omitted from Alfred Wainwright’s primary Pictorial Guides. It is, however, recorded as a Birkett and a Synge, rewarding those who venture off the main motorway of the Helvellyn ridge path.
  • The summit occupies a dramatic position between Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike. From the cairn, the ground drops away sharply into the glacial hanging valley of Ruthwaite Cove, home to the remains of the old Ruthwaite Lodge.
  • The vantage point offers an exceptional view of the dark, imposing face of Eagle Crag across the cove, and a distant, framed perspective of Place Fell and the Far Eastern Fells rising beyond the Patterdale valley.
  • It remains one of the highest points in England to be regularly stepped over by hikers who are too focused on the progress toward Helvellyn to notice they have summited a distinct Birkett.
