About Helvellyn Lower Man

Often overlooked in the rush for the main summit, this high northwestern shoulder offers one of the best perspectives on Helvellyn’s dramatic eastern coves. It stands at the meeting point of the ridges from White Side and Glenridding Screes, providing a quieter, airy vantage point overlooking the steep drops of Brown Cove.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Man' is a common Cumbrian dialect term for a summit or a prominent cairn, likely derived from the Old Norse 'man', referring to a human-like figure or a man-made pile of stones on a skyline.
  • Though it is a subsidiary top of Helvellyn, it is classified as a Nuttall and a Birkett in its own right due to its height and the 12-metre drop that separates it from the main plateau.
  • The summit offers a superior view compared to the main peak for those looking north; it perfectly frames the Vale of Keswick with the massive profiles of Skiddaw and Blencathra dominating the horizon.
  • While Alfred Wainwright did not give it a separate chapter, he noted that for walkers ascending from the north, this point represents the dramatic 'corner' where the gentle slopes of the west suddenly meet the sheer crags of the east.
  • Many walkers ascending from the Thirlmere side mistakenly celebrate reaching the highest point of the range here, only to realize the true summit lies a further ten minutes of walking to the south.
  • The steep slopes of Brown Cove, directly below the summit to the east, often hold snow well into the spring, making it a popular spot for winter climbers and hardy skiers when conditions allow.
