About Capull Cloiche

Rising to 577 metres above the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll, this grassy summit offers a straightforward climb with surprisingly extensive views for its modest height. The hill's classification as both a Dodd and Tump reflects its topographic prominence in an area of rolling moorland and forested slopes, standing between Loch Fyne and the more dramatic peaks to the north.

Did You Know?

  • The name Capull Cloiche comes from Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'stone horse' or 'horse of the stone', likely referring to a distinctive rock formation on or near the hill that resembled a horse in profile, or perhaps marking a boundary stone associated with horse droving routes.
  • Despite its relatively modest height, the summit provides clear views across Loch Fyne to the Arrochar Alps, with Ben Lomond visible on clearer days to the northeast.
  • The hill sits within the Cowal Peninsula, an area historically isolated by sea lochs and once accessible mainly by ferry, giving it a quiet, overlooked character even today despite reasonable road access from Dunoon.
