Did You Know?

  • Meall Dearg translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Red Rounded Hill,' likely a reference to the way the evening sun illuminates the heather or the underlying granite outcrops that characterise this part of the Argyll coast.
  • Positioned directly above the northern shore of Loch Etive, the summit offers an exceptional view across the water to the massive, steep-sided granite slabs of Beinn Trilleachan.
  • The ascent from sea level at Inveresragan means that despite its modest height, you will climb almost the entire vertical profile of the hill, making for a surprisingly strenuous short day out.
  • While it lacks the fame of the nearby Glen Coe peaks, its isolation means it remains a quiet spot where you are far more likely to encounter golden eagles or red deer than a fellow walker.
