Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Meall Odhar', which translates as 'dun-coloured hill' or 'sallow hill', a reference to the muted heather and grass tones characteristic of the high Mounth moorland.
- •It occupies a strategic position on the eastern side of the Cairnwell Pass, acting as a lower sentinel to the higher massifs of Glas Maol and Creag Leacach which dominate the skyline immediately to the north.
- •From the summit, walkers can look directly down the length of Glenshee towards the Spittal, with the sharp, isolated profile of Mount Blair clearly visible to the south-east across the Shee Water.
- •Despite being surrounded by some of Scotland’s most developed skiing terrain, the hill retains a remote feel, often bypassed by those heading straight for the higher summits from the A93.
- •It is one of the few places in the immediate vicinity where you can enjoy the bracing silence of the Highlands without the rhythmic hum of a nearby chairlift ringing in your ears.
