About Knocknasheega

Situated in the rolling foothills of the Monavullagh Mountains near the Nire Valley, this Tump offers a quieter alternative to the high Comeragh plateaus. Rising to 430 metres, the heather-clad summit provides clear views across the Suir Valley toward the Slievenamon massif and the sharp peaks of the Galtee Mountains.

Did You Know?

  • The name is likely derived from the Irish 'Cnoc na Síoga', translating to 'Hill of the Fairies', a common indicator in Irish toponymy of a site historically associated with local folklore or ancient mounds.
  • From the summit, walkers are rewarded with a clear perspective of the Suir Valley to the north and the imposing western ridge of the Comeragh Mountains, including the prominent peak of Knockanaffrin.
  • While it sits at a lower elevation than the main Comeragh range, its location provides a useful vantage point for spotting the Galty Mountains to the west on a clear day.
  • As a Tump, the hill is defined by having a drop of at least 30 metres on all sides—a fact of great importance to map-obsessed hikers, though likely of little concern to the fairies mentioned in its name.
