About Knocknanask

Situated on the northern fringes of the Knockmealdown Mountains, this 486m Hump offers a quiet alternative to the busier main ridge. The heather-covered summit provides a grandstand view across the Suir Valley, looking directly towards the high Galtee Mountains and the lonely silhouette of Slievenamon to the northeast.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish Cnoc na nEasc, which translates as 'Hill of the Marshes' or 'Hill of the Water-channels', reflecting the damp, peaty character of the terrain common in this part of County Tipperary.
  • The summit offers a unique perspective on the Knockmealdown range, looking south towards the much higher peaks of Sugarloaf Hill and Knockmealdown itself, which block the horizon in a massive wall of sandstone.
  • Being classified as both a Hump and a Tump ensures it receives just enough visitors to keep the local sheep curious, though most hikers are usually too busy eyeing the 794-metre main peak to the south to stop here.
