About Foel y Geifr

Rising above the southeastern shores of Llyn Tegid, this grassy Hewitt offers a quieter, wilder experience than the popular Arans nearby. The summit is marked by a solitary trig point set amidst expansive heather and bog, providing an excellent vantage point over the deep trough of Cwm Hirnant and the rolling Berwyn range.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'Hill of the Goats,' a common topographical marker in Wales denoting high ground once used for grazing or frequented by feral herds.
  • Geographically, the hill sits on a disputed boundary; while often bagged as part of the Berwyn range, it is physically the easternmost outpost of the Arans, connected via the ridge of Esgeiriau Gwynion.
  • The summit offers a specific, linear view down the full length of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) toward the northwest, providing one of the best perspectives of the lake's scale.
  • It forms a cornerstone of the 'Hirnant Horseshoe,' a high-level circuit that includes the neighbouring summits of Foel Goch and Trum y Gwragedd, traversing some of the most remote moorland in the region.
  • The terrain between here and Moel y Cerrig Duon is a specialist environment for peat-hags; it is the sort of ground where a walker’s progress is measured less in miles per hour and more in successful leaps between tufts of rushes.
