Carnedd y Filiast

Rising above the wild Migneint moors, this broad, heather-clad peak is the highest point of the northern Arenigs. Reaching its 669m summit requires navigating pathless, boggy terrain that rewards the effort with a profound sense of isolation and clear, unobstructed views across to the main Arenig massif and the Moelwynion.

• •The name translates from Welsh as 'Cairn of the Greyhound Bitch', a recurring name in Welsh topography that often relates to the legendary hunting of a white hare or a specific resting place of a prince's dog.
• •Despite its status as a Marilyn and a Hewitt, the hill is frequently bypassed by walkers heading for the more dramatic peaks of the Snowdon massif, leaving its vast moorland plateaus remarkably quiet.
• •The summit offers a specific, elevated perspective of the remote Llyn Celyn reservoir to the south, framed by the steep northern slopes of Arenig Fawr.
• •The approach from the east involves crossing Cwm Hesgyn, a valley known for its prehistoric remains, including several Bronze Age cairns and stone circles that mirror the mountain's name.
• •Reaching the summit is less of a mountaineering challenge and more an exercise in strategic navigation, primarily concerned with avoiding the deeper patches of sphagnum moss and hidden peat hags.
