About Carrigshouk

Rising above the Military Road near the Sally Gap, this heathery Tump offers a quieter alternative to the busy trails of nearby Glendalough. Its broad, often boggy slopes provide an excellent vantage point over the Glenmacnass Valley, looking directly across at the massive bulk of Mullaghcleevaun and the impressive cliffs of Tonelagee.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish Carraig an tSeabhaic, meaning 'Rock of the Hawk', likely referring to the birds of prey that hunt across the craggy outcrops on its eastern flanks.
  • Its proximity to the R115 Military Road makes it one of the most accessible summits in the central Wicklow range, often used as a quick leg-stretcher or a starting point for the long, peat-heavy ridge walk towards Mullaghcleevaun East Top.
  • From the summit, you gain a clear profile of the 'Heart Lake' (Lough Ouler) tucked into the corrie beneath Tonelagee to the south, a perspective often missed by those walking the more popular trails at lower elevations.
  • In wet weather, the terrain between the road and the summit serves as a useful reminder that in Wicklow, the distance on the map is secondary to the depth of the peat hags you must negotiate.
