About Tonelagee NE Top
Rising from the broad, peat-heavy plateau of the Wicklow Mountains, this subsidiary summit offers a quieter perspective than its parent peak. The terrain is often saturated and trackless, but the rewards are specific: a commanding view directly down into the dramatic glacial trough of Glenmacnass and across to the massive bulk of Mullaghcleevaun.

Did You Know?
- •The name Tonelagee is derived from the Irish 'Tóin le Gaoith', which translates to 'backside to the wind', a fitting description for this exposed high-altitude ridge that bears the brunt of south-westerly gales.
- •The summit provides an excellent vantage point for viewing the Military Road as it snakes across the desolate moorland toward the Sally Gap, with the distinct, pointed profile of the Great Sugar Loaf visible on the horizon.
- •It is most frequently visited as a detour on the circuit from the Glenmacnass Waterfall, sitting on the high shoulder above the steep eastern scarp that drops sharply into the valley.
- •The terrain between this top and the main summit is a masterclass in Wicklow 'hags'—deep, black peat gullies that can turn a simple kilometre-long stroll into a tactical exercise in bog-leaping.
