About Stoney Top
Rising to over 700 metres in the wild heart of the Wicklow Mountains, this rugged shoulder sits just northwest of Mullaghcleevaun. The terrain is classic peat bog and heather, offering a quieter alternative to the busier main summits. From the top, you gain a massive perspective on the granite bulk of Mullaghcleevaun and the deep folds of Glenbride.

Did You Know?
- •The name is a straightforward English descriptor for the scattered granite boulders and scree that break through the peat and heather, a common feature of the granite-cored Wicklow uplands.
- •It is a significant satellite peak of Mullaghcleevaun, the second-highest mountain in the range, and is frequently crossed by hikers approaching the main summit from the northwest via the Ballymorefinn valley.
- •The summit provides an excellent vantage point over the Poulaphouca Reservoir (Blessington Lakes) to the west, framed by the lower rolling hills of the Kildare border.
- •Despite the promising name, you are likely to encounter more knee-deep peat hags than solid stone underfoot, particularly on the saturated saddle connecting it to the main ridge.
