About Moanlaur

Rising above the southern slopes of the Slieve Mish range, this broad, peat-clad summit offers a quieter alternative to its more rugged northern neighbours. Its position on the Dingle Peninsula provides an exceptional vantage point for surveying the waters of Dingle Bay and the distant, jagged silhouettes of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks.

Did You Know?

  • The name Moanlaur is derived from the Irish Móin Láir, meaning 'Middle Bog.' This is a literal description of its location amidst the extensive peatlands that characterise the central plateau of the Slieve Mish Mountains.
  • While less dramatic than the nearby Baurtregaum, the summit offers an unobstructed view of the southern coastline, stretching from the Inch Strand sandspit across Dingle Bay to the Iveragh Peninsula.
  • The hill is frequently climbed as part of a high-level circuit from the village of Camp to the north, often paired with the neighbouring peak of Knockmore to overlook the deep glacial trough of the Finglas River valley.
  • True to its Gaelic name, the summit plateau is famously sponge-like; it is one of those Irish hills where the 'path' is often more of a liquid suggestion than a solid surface.
